《中国现代文学史略（英文版）》是中国现代文学史研究的奠基性著作，作者首次在研究中使用了“现代文学”这一称谓，对中国现代文学研究成为一门独立的学科做出了极大的贡献。作者并不局限于以文论文，以诗论诗，而是笔涉文学，意寄兴亡，从宽广的历史背景中，寻求和探索这一时期“文章得失升降之故”抒发出深沉的历史感慨。
