本书以《全国英语等级考试词汇手册》为依据，将约4000个PETS1-3级词汇依次分别排列为PETS一级词汇、PETS二级词汇和PETS三级词汇，并把每级词汇分别列为若干个Vocabulary Lists，同时还将PETS考试常用词组按常用程度相应地分为1-3级词组，分别列于PETS1-3级词汇之后。另外，在每个Vocabulary Lists后都附有一套背诵成果测试题，用以检测和巩固学生对这个Vocabulary Lists中词汇的掌握。这种编排方式，结合本书中运用的词汇联想记忆方法，便于考生从易处着手，由易到难，依次突破，及时巩固。学生可根据自己的实际情况合理分配时间，从而达到有的放矢、事半功倍的学习效果。
