Since the appeance of this play The
Romance of the Western Chamber in the thirteenth century, it has
enjoyed unparalleled popularity. The play has given rise to
innumerable sequels, parodies, and rewritings; it has influenced
countless later plays, short stories, and novels and has played a
crucial role in the development of drama crilicism. The theme of
the drama is an attack on feudal mores, supporting the longing of
young people in those days for freedom of marriage, although it
follows the timeworn pattern of a gifted scholar and a beautiful
lady falling in love at first sight. This book, with plain words,
intends to help foreign readers understand the story and appreciate
classic Chinese opera.

版权页： 插图： Ever since her arrivalat the temple，Madam Cui would spend her days burning incense and reciting Buddhist scriptures in the honor of her deceased husband.Wishing for the abbot to arrange for a Buddhist funeral service，she sent Hongniang to meet with him and plan out the details. Upon arriving at the abbot's room,she saw him conversing with a handsome and refined young scholar,discussing the renting of a room in the temple.After announcing her presence, Hongniang questioned the abbot about the possibilities for the funeral service. The abbot said，“The fifteenth day ofthe second lunar month is a befitting day.Please tell Madam Cui that we are honored to perform the service and everything needed for it is already prepared." Hongniang replied，“Excellent.Would you mind if I take a look at the Buddha Hall so that I may relate it to my mistress？” The abbot stood up and said to Zhang Sheng,“Sir,kindly wait here a moment.I'll go show the hall to this young lady and be back shortly." Zhang Sheng,having nothing to do,asked if he could go along with the pair,and the three of them set off for the Buddha Hall.Zhang Sheng politely allowed Hongniang to go first，and she made a note to herself of his good manners.
