出生于1917年，是美国当代著名的通俗小说作家。早年毕业于西北大学，二战期间曾在美国空军服役，退伍后为百老汇写剧本，曾获戏剧“托尼”奖和电影“奥斯卡奖”。1970年发表第一部长篇小说《裸脸》，获“爱伦·坡”奖。他的小说大多以西方上流社会的活动为背景，主人公很多都是自强不息、与社会作决死拼斗的女性，对强者的推崇有社会达尔文主义的气息。谢尔顿是一个故事大师，他小说中的故事情节迭宕起伏、一波三折、悬念丛生，时空跨度大、人物多、涉足领域广，读罢有酣畅淋漓的感觉。主要作品有《天使的愤怒》、《滴血的钻石》、《假若明天来临》等。
2007年1月31日，谢尔顿因肺炎并发症在棕榈泉市的一家医院里去世，享年89岁。
