本书共收集近500条惯用词语，大致可分为两类。一类是通用型，一类是专业型。所谓通用型是说在各行各业都可能会用到；而所谓专业型是说只有在外贸业务中才会用到。每一条除了指明词性及意义等外，都列出两条以上例句加以说明。例句中有的还进行分析比较，还有的列出多种可以替代的或解释性的同义例句，还有的列出易于出现的误句，以警示读者。这些例句内容反映的都是外贸业务中可能会出现的情况，旨在造成一种外贸气氛，从而使读者一拿起本书就感到置身于外贸实务中。
