What Can I Do? The little boy walked home in a sad mood. His mother was cooking supper in the kitchen. Her smile stopped when she saw her sons expression. “Tyler, what happened? Is everything okay?”the mother asked. "Nothing is Okay, mom. Nothing will ever be okay again." The boy cried and then he continued," Today, in science class, the teacher talked about Earth Day and the environment. She told us how many companies are not careful about how to get rid of their industrial waste. She said that our world is getting dirtier and that many animals and plants are dying. She Wanted us to think of something we can do to help and I kept thinking all the way home. But there is nothing I can do. I cant stop the companies from polluting our air and water, and I cant save all the animals!" The mother thought for a moment and said, "Let me tell you a story. One morning a man was walking down a beach that was covered with dying starfish. The tide the night before had washed up thousands of starfish on shore. The man shook his head and thought it was a pity that all the starfish would die on the beach. Then he saw a boy who was throwing the starfish back into the ocean one by One as fast as he could. Soon he was out of breath. Son, the man said, youd better quit. There are thousands of them and you cant make any difference. The boy didnt even pause in what he was doing and said, I can make a difference to this one, and this one, and this one."
