  Which of the suggestions made by the interviewees sound most realistic to you? Can you think of any other steps to take to resolve the situation? Make a list with your partner and compare them with the rest of the class. Skim read the report written by Macey and Kirill for Oxfoods Human Resources manager.  hat do they recommend? Who should do it?  This report examines the breakdown in the working relationship between two department managers, Thomas Meyer and Erol Sahin, at the Oxfood Geneva headquarters. It recommends that they receive conflict counselling.  FINDINGS  interviews were carried out with key personnel in both departments where it was found that a classic conflict situation exists. Conflict management research shows that conflicts normally go through three stages:  Stage I - Debate and Disagreement. The atmosphere between the parties is tense and marked by regular confrontations and minimal cooperation.  This has been the state of affairs between Sahin and Meyer for the last quarter.Stage 2 - Alliances and Action. The situation becomes severely polarised. Both parties now  escalate the tension by looking for support for their position from colleagues and by undermining their opponent.  At Oxfood, Meyer and Sahin are now constantly complaining about each other to senior colleagues as well as their own staff. Furthermore, each tries to make life difficult for the other by withholding information and resources.  Stage 3 - Breakdown and Barricades. Differences become so severe that no direct communication between the two parties is possible and each tries to destroy the other.  Conflict between Meyer and Sahin has not reached this crisis stage yet.
