近20年来，翻译研究领域出现了明显的“文化转向”，有很多学者从关注两种语言之间的转换，转为从历史的角度通过描写的方式来研究翻译问题，意在揭示翻译涉及的各种社会文化因素。作为“文化学派”的代表作之一，本书是以推动翻译学科本身的发展为目的的基于理性的研究，涉及文学翻译之历史描述的不同方面，探讨了以往被忽略的一些非常重要的问题，并提出了一些切实可行的对翻译中的文化因素加以描述的模式。本书十分契合国内翻译界目前对回归理性研究和本体研究的呼唤，可以为我国译学范畴的文化研究和教学提供非常有益的参考。
