英语语音、语法和词汇通常被称为英语语言“三要素”，从应用出发考察这三要素，可以找到三者之间的交汇点，这就是句法，无论是语音、语法或词汇，在应用中都要向句法靠拢、被整合到句法中去，句法处于三者中的轴心位置。从应用的角度看，句子是实现语言交际的基本意义单位，而句法则关系到句子的构造和结构模式。句法既有直接的应用价值，也有深层的研究价值，对有志向准理论和纯理论方向发展的研习者来说，句法不失为一个理想的基点：从英语句法向英语句法学，从英语句法学而旁及诸如英语音位学、英语语义学、英语文体等等英语语言专论，可谓顺理成章、自然进阶。 本书就是基于上述“应用为主，打好基础”的认识编著的，旨在结合中国人研习和使用英语的特点，即以中国人的视角，展现英语句法体系，并在构思和表述上力求有所突破和创新，摒弃烦琐的空论，充实实用的内容。
