《美国通俗小说菁华（18-19世纪卷）》是国内第一部相关英文著作，旨在为我国大专院校英语专业、相关专业的学生以及社会上广大英语文学爱好者提供一座学习、欣赏美国通俗文学的桥梁，帮助他们真正了解美国通俗文学发展的全貌，与此同时，在轻松、愉悦的阅读过程中，熟悉、掌握美国各个历史时期最贴近社会生活的语言，从而快速提高自身的英语运用能力。本书汇集了该时期脍炙人口的美国通俗小说精华30篇，涉及到引诱言情小说、哥特式小说、历史浪漫小说、古典式侦探小说、西部冒险小说、女性言情小说、城市暴露小说、廉价西部小说、宗教小说、蜜糖言情小说、新历史浪漫小说、超自然恐怖小说等12个主要类型和30位重要作家。在编写体例上，突出实用性和系统性，每一所选章节之前均撰有类型介绍和作家介绍，正文则依据难易程度，加有数量不等的注释，以帮助理解。书末附有参考书目，供进一步学习、研究之用。
黄禄善，上海大学外国语学院英语系教授，外国通俗文学研究中心主任。上海作家协会会员，上海翻译家协会会员。著有《美国通俗小说史》、《英美通俗小说概述》两部专著，译有《美国的悲剧》、《合伙人》、《鸽房女尸案》、《绿色贝雷帽》、《墓掘》、《荒岛剑鸣》等10部长篇小说，其中《墓掘》获《译林》优秀长篇小说二等奖，《荒岛剑鸣》获江西省译协首届优秀翻译三等奖，《绿色贝雷帽》获《译林》优秀长篇小说三等奖。另主编有《世界文学名著典藏》、《西方灵异小说》《西方高科技惊险小说》、《欲望人》等号套外国文学丛书。
