Since the fifth edition of the Foundations of Embryology was peblished in 1988, the field of embryology has undergone revolutionary changes. Rapidly developing lechniques in molecular biology and in manipulation of the genetic makeup of embryos, especially the mouse, have added an immense store of new data to our knowledge of embryonic development. Many of these new approaches have stemmed from the field of Drosophila developmental genetics. Equally important is the demonstration that many of the genes that govern developmental events in Drosophila have persisted with amazingly few changes over hundreds of millions of years and are found to play equally important roles in vertebrate embryos. The speed with which new knowledge is accumu- lating is breathtaking; not a month goes by without new genes being discovered or new functions for other genes being ascertained. Much of the new molecular knowledge is highly descriptive in nature, but increasingly common are studies in which molecular description is combined with genetic or experimental manipulation. It is still too early to provide a complete flowchart of molecular and genetic control of embryonic development, but in some organ systems great progress is being made.

Embryonic development has fascinated people since the dawn of our time. From the simple questions of a child, to the speculations of primitive societies, to the current controversies about cloning and other technological approaches to reproduction, the mystery of how our bodies came to be has been high in human consciousness. Aristotle's(384-322 B.C.) studies are significant tor us because they represent a shift from superstition and conjecture toward observation. Unfortunately. his approach did not take firm root, Through much nf the Middle Ages the spark that the better Greek and Roman scholars had been attempting to fan was smothered by bigotry and authoritarianism.
