本书系“剑桥文学指南丛书”中的一种，收录了国际知名学者的14篇文章。全书共分两个部分。第一部分从文化意识形态、政治经济状况和文学艺术传统等大的方面来论述产生17世纪英国诗歌的背景。第二部分则是对多恩、赫理克、卡鲁、赫伯特、琼生、弥尔顿、克拉肖、沃恩和马韦尔等诗人的个别研究。每篇文章均自成体系，从作者各自的研究和知识背景出发，谈论各不相同的题材，这些文章所体现的批评方法和批评理论，代表着近25年来英国文学的研究成果。从这个意义上来说，这是一本了解17世纪上半叶英国诗歌和其时代背景的必读之书。
