《高职公共英语教程》是根据教育部颁布的《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求（试行）》的精神及《教育部关于以就业为导向、深化高等职业教育改革的若干意见》中所提出的“高等职业教育应以服务为宗旨，以就业为导向，走产学研结合的发展道路”编写的。其鲜明特点有三：听说领先、重视基础、强调实用。改革开放以来，我国大学生的英语水平特别是阅读水平有了明显提高，但听说能力一直是薄弱环节。为了弥补这一不足，本教程将听说摆在了每课的重要位置，在《高职公共英语教程。教师用书》中给出了详细的对白，与配套的光盘结合使用，可将语言基础能力的培养与实际涉外交际能力的训练有机结合起来，以满足21世纪全球化社会经济发展对高职人才的要求。高职学生不同于高校本科生，与本科生在入学水平及求职方向上也有明显差别。高职教学强调理论够用为度、动手能力及应用能力为主。本教程的编写充分体现了这一精神，其中第3册内容全部是应用文，这也是本教程全新的尝试。 本书的编写人员由办学取得卓越成就的教育家、英语专家，具有丰富教材编写经验的资深教授及工作在教学第一线的优秀高职英语教师组成，确保了教材的科学性、针对性及实用性。
