French composer Camille Saint-Saans (1835 1921) produced a vast and illustrious body of work characterized by high standards in form, style, and workmanship. Despite the overall seriousness of his music, however, Saint-Saens is perhaps best known for his lighthearted masterpiece, Le Carnaval des Animanx ( Grande Fantaisie Zoologiqaue ). Written in 1886 for an annual Mardi Cras concert, The Carnival of the Animals consists of" 14 pieces scored for flute/piccolo, clarinet, glass harmonica (tuned glass bowls), xylophone, two pianos, and strings. Each piece embodies a zoological motif', painting a delightful musical portrait of--among others--a lion, chickens, turtles, an elephant, kangaroos, and the immensely popular swan. In his joyfult musical romp, the composer playfully borrows themes from well-known classical works, inchlding references to Berlioz and Mendelssohn in "The Elephant," and even passages of his own Danse Macabre in "Fossils." Reprinted from the original, authoritative score, this handsome and inexpensive edition will charm musicians and music lovers evervvhere.
