This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First International Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval, AMR 2003, held in Hamburg, Germany in September 2003.　　The 12 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. Also included are three invited papers by leading researchers in the area to provide introductory and background information and to complete coverage of the relevant aspects.
