YangYichouwasborninJiangsuProvincein1936andisageographer，geomorphologistandscientificexplorer.Heworksasdeputyperma-nentsecretary-generaloftheChineseAssocia-tionofScientificExploration.HegraduatedfromNanjingUniversity'sFac-ultyofGeographyin1957.In1959，hebegantoresearchtheQinghai-TibetPlateauandhasbeentheremorethan20times.HehasbeentotheYarlungZangboGrandCanyoneighttimes.Hehasmadegreatcontributionstotheexplo-rationofthecanyonandtoprovingthatitistheworld'sbiggestcanyon.HehaswonmajorawardssuchastheNationalNaturalScienceAward（first-class）and the Tan Kah-kee（Chen Jiageng）award for earth sciences.
