《拓展性高级阅读教程》所选内容均来自英美报刊，内容涉及经济、贸易、文化、医学、服饰、饮食、习俗等多方面。共分两部分，每部分8个单元，共16单元。每单元有两篇课文，课后附有注释、背景介绍，并配有阅读理解或信息处理练习题。此外。“阅读小贴士”介绍了英语报刊标题在用词、语法、修辞等方面的特点，解释了课文内容所涉及的各领域的常用基本术语。同时，《拓展性高级阅读教程》还讨论了英汉互译的相关问题。本书由沈逸平主编。

《拓展性高级阅读教程》的阅读以获取信息为主，通过信息处理的练习来检验读者的阅读理解程度。所以，要摒弃“逐字细读”的习惯，不能只懂“只言片语”。报刊阅读的理解重点是文章的中心思想，是围绕文章主题的重要论点，是作者的观点和态度，是读者与作者交流后读者所形成的自己的见解。为达到此目的，本教材还配有适量的语言练习和其他指导，以帮助读者提高英语水平，扩大知识面，了解英语报刊的风格。本教材共分两部分，每部分8个单元，共16单元。除了部分单元外，每单元有两篇课文。
