书摘 Ⅱ.Talking about Space 1.Yes.on the night ofthe Mid-Autumn Festival when 1 was five years old'my father and 1 went out to enjoy looking at the bright moon.1 wondered what and who would be there and 1 asked my father some questions. From then on I read a lot books on space. Our solar system consists of an average star we call the Sun,the planets Memu, Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune, and Pluto. The Sun is the richest source of electromagnetic energy(mostly in the form of heat and light)in the solar svstem. The planets.most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the Sun in the salne direction,in nearly circular orbits. The whole solar system, together with the local stars visible on a clear nisht, orbits the centre of our home galaxy,a spiral disk of 200 billion stars we call the Milky Way.The Milky Way is a gravitationally bound collection ofroughly a hundred billion stars. Our Sun is one ofthese stars and is located roughly 24,000 light years(or 8000 parsecs)away from the center of the Milky Wav. 2.The British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was born in 1942.He hasdevoted much of his life to probin g the space-time described by general relativity and the singularities where it breaks down. And he’S done most of this WOrk while COnfined to a wheelchair, brought on by the pmgressive neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.Hawking is the Lueasian Professor of Matllematics at Cambridge,a post once held by Isaac Newton. In the late 1960s,Hawking proved that if general relativity is true and theuniveme is expanding,a singularity must have occurred at the birth of the universe. In 1974 he fimt recognized a truly remarkable property of black holes, objects from which nothing was supposed to be able to escape.By taking into account quantum mechanics, he was able to show that black holes Can radiate energy as particles are created in their vicinity. But perhaps his most impressive feat was writing the international bestseIIer A BRIEF HIsTORY 0F TIME.I.Useful Expressions of Assigning and Checking ExercisesRole.Play Exercise 1 A:Now,1 will assign after-class exercises to you. Please open your books, turn to page 167.Have you got it,Xu Lan? B:Yes,I gut it.It is the after-class reading passage:“Grandpa’S Girl”. A:Good. That’S what I ask you to read after class and a summary will be needed to hand in next Monday.Any questions? B:Yes,Mr.Zhang, would you please tell me:do you have any requirement about the length of the summary? IA:Oh,as it is a summary,I don’t want you to write it very complicatedly. So keep it short, about 150 WOrds. B:OK,I know.1 will try to use what I have learnt today to write an idiomatic summary.Any other assignment? A:Learn the text well.Be sure that you undemtand the meaning of the text.Remember all the new words and be sure that you know their spelling, pronunciationand meaning. B:1 will review today’S lcsson and lcam all the new words by heart. Exercise 2 (After checking the exercises) A:You did quite well in the first part。but you missed tWO senmnccs in the secomd part. B:Oh.I see.I do apologize for my negligence. A:And there are several grammatical mistakes in this 8hon dialogue you have written. For example,in this sentence, you see? B:Letme have alook. A:Do yon understand why? B:Yes,I know:the verb must agree with its subject in person and number.Butwould you tell me in this case.what tense should be used? A:That’s a good question.Let me see.It is correct to use the present tense here as. B:I have to apologize again that I didn’t review the lesson last ni曲t,for 1 was not feeling very well and I slept earlier. A:Don’t be discouraged:everything takes time.Try to do better next time. B:OK.1 will.1 will try my best to improve my English. Ⅱ. A Dialogue Tapescript (A: Adam, a journalist. B: Bob, a worker working for Gallup Polls.) A: You have held a poll recently. What is it about? B: It's about what our people think of information about UFOs. A: Do our people think UFOs are real? B: Forty-eight percent believe UFOs are "something real," not just people's imagination; thirteen pereent of Americans say they've personally seen something they thought was a UFO. Even of those who haven't been lucky enough to see one in person, many believe others' stories. A: If they have seen a UFO, do they believe it was an alien spacecraft? B: A lot of people seem to think we've seen aliens zipping around. About 4 percent of all Americans say they have seen an actual alien spacecraft. A third of those people are convinced that they're "alien spacecraft from other worlds." A: It is said the poll reports that most Americans are convinced that the government is hiding information about UFOs. Is that true? B: Yes. As it turns out, fully a third of Americans think the feds have strong evidence or solid proof that alien beings have visited Earth. Most Americans, 73 percent, think the govermnent is covering up important information about UFOs. About 33 percent believe the information hidden by the government is strong evidence or solid proof that aliens have visited the Earth. A: Does that mean people don't trust the government? Or are they just confused? B: Hard to say, really. A: Do our people think intelligent life exists in outer space? B: Regardless of what they think about little green men coming to the Earth, 69 percent believe that some form of intelligent life exists,in outer space. That's 22 percent, from 47 percent, in a poll conducted 15 years ago.……
