自我国提出大力发展高等职业技术教育以来，高职教育已取得了前所未有的成就，占据了中国高等教育的半壁江山。特别是2006年教育部颁布了《关于全面提高高等职业教育教学质量的若干意见》，指出高职教育是高等教育的一种“类型”以来，高职教育的发展更是一片欣欣向荣。通过示范性院校建设项目和精品课程项目的启动和实施，高职教育日益彰显其作为高等教育的一种“类型”的本质属性和特征。高技能人才培养模式也正由传统封闭的学校教育转向现代开放的校企合作办学模式，工学结合已成为高职教育人才培养模式改革的重要切入点。但是，要实现这一培养模式，课程改革是关键。高职教育与普通高等教育的类别特征及与中等职业教育的层次区别，也集中反映在其课程体系与课程内容之中。正如姜大源先生所说，想实现工学结合，而又不对课程进行改革，那么只能是镜花水月。课程始终是职业教育和教学改革的核心。事实证明，没有课程改革的教育改革一定是一场不彻底的、没有深度的，因而也不可能有实质性突破的改革。正因为如此，中国高职教育整体的改革步伐始终伴随着三次课程改革的浪潮。第一次浪潮为20世纪80年代中后期至90年代初期，课程改革重点强调建设学科体系和实践体系双轨制的课程体系；第二次浪潮为20世纪90年代中后期至21世纪初，课程改革重点强调建设能力本位的模块化高职教育的课程体系；第三次浪潮为2006年以后，开始探索构建基于工作过程系统化和项目化的行动导向的课程体系。国家示范性高职院校建设计划和国家精品课程建设项目以及国家高职名师的评选计划的实施，标志着我国高职教育发展正式转向内涵建设。目前，高职教育课程模式由单一走向多元，从封闭走向开放，以产业、行业、企业、职业、实践要素以及其工作过程系统化为基础，以真实的工作任务或产品为载体来对课程进行整体设计，将行业、企业技术标准与通用权威的职业资格标准引进课程，初步形成了职业实践导向的高职教育课程体系。伴随着三次课程改革浪潮，高职教材建设也开展得如火如荼。基于实践本位理念的、基于能力本位理念的以及基于工作过程导向理念的各种形式的高职教材相继而出。尽管如此，但整体而言，作为高职院校基本建设之一的教材建设，仍然滞后于高等职业教育发展的步伐，以至于许多高职院校的学生缺乏适用的教材。
本书基于工作任务及任务情景来设计单元教学模块，以涉外导游工作对英语的需求以及旅游主要环节的时间顺序和逻辑关系为主线，比较全面地介绍了涉外旅游工作的各个环节，包括旅游预定、入境及接站、酒店入住、客房服务、餐饮服务、导游服务、城市观光、送站及离境、投诉处理等，同时还涉及旅游常识、自然景观、人文景观、饮食文化、跨文化交际等诸多方面的知识。 本书不仅可作为旅游专业的教材，也可作为旅行社导游的工作手册，同时对非旅游专业的学生或喜爱英语语言学习的人员来说，《实用旅游英语》亦能帮助他们拓宽知识面，增强交际能力。
