3.2Prefixes A prefix consists of one or two syllables placed before a word inorder to modify the meaning of the word. Often these syllables areprepositions or adverbs. Prefixes are commonly used to help describethe appearance of, or the location of, an anatomical part.Forexample, the term adrenal, the name of a ductless gland above thekidney, is composed of the prefix ad, which means near, and a rootrenal, which means kidney. Combine the prefix and the root and thenthere is a term that means "near the kidney". Commonly used prefixesand their definitions are listed in Appendix I. 3.3Suffixes A suffix refers to a syllable or a group of syllables attached to theend of a word root to modify the meaning of it. By adding a suffix to aword root, one may change the meaning of a word, or merely changeits grammatical function,i.e.,create a noun or an adjective.Commonly used suffixes and their definitions are listed in Appendix Ⅱ. 3.4Combining vowels Combining vowels are sometimes used to create a more fluidtransition between word parts and to make medical terms easier topronounce.Forexample, thetermsplenomegalymeanstheenlargement of the spleen. It is the combination of the root word splenmeaning spleen, and the suffix megaly meaning enlargement. The "O"which follows the root word splen is a combining vowel which simplymakes the word flow better. The vowel used most often to combinemedical words is "0", but other vowels are also sometimes used. Itshould be noted that combining vowels may be used between two rootwords, or between a root word and a suffix, but they are never usedbetween prefixes and root words.
