Dictation-Cloze Hints 1.This blank should have three words in it. The first word is what you do with your voice when you want someone to come to you. The third word is the opposite of down. 2.You want two words here. The first word ends in a sound that is made by putting the tongue between the teeth, and the second is the plural of a noun that denotes the place your family lives. 3.Both of these words begin with the letter f. The first word is the opposite of near. 4.The same word is repeated twice in this phrase. The two-letter preposition in between means "next to". 5.The first of the two words needed contains the word ear and means "close to". The second word has something to do with the pronoun we. 6.This word is often confused with want by learners of English. You must have an apostrophe between the last two letters. 7.This word is what happens to a dish if you drop it by mistake. 8.The second word is something you do with your eyes. 9.This is a transitive verb meaning "bring up". Parents do this to their children by teaching them how to behave as well as giving them food and clothing. 10.You have to fill in three words. The first two words begin with w and the last with b. The letter /in the second word is silent. 11.This three-word phrase means "come to my place at once". The second word is the opposite of off, and the third is the opposite of under. The Origins of Tea and coffee For centuries, tea and coffee have been enjoyed in large parts of the world. The origin and history of these two popular beverages are also interesting. Chinese legend has it that tea was discovered by accident around 2700 B.C. by Emperor Shen-Nung. One day, some leaves from a wild plant happened to drop into the water he was boiling. The result was a fragrant beverage something like present-day Chinese tea. This newly discovered drink came to be used as a medicine since it made those who drank it healthy. It was not until the seventeenth century that tea was introduced into the West. Queen Catherine of England received a box of tea as a gift from the British East India Tea Company, As time went by, more and more people came to know and enjoy this stimulating beverage. As a result, clippers were put into use to speed up tea trade with the Orient, and tea gradually gained its present popularity in England. When the colonists came to America, they brought their tea-drinking habits with them. However, England levied heavy duties on tea shipped to the colonies. This angered the colonists so much that they boycotted all British tea in 1773. Some people say that this marked the beginning of coffee drinking on a large scale in the United States. ……
