Maurice Ravel's unparalleled flair for orchestration is on full display in hismasterful arrangement of his own piano showpiece, Alborada del Gracioso. Originally the fourth of a set of five piano pieces from the 1904 cycle Miroirs (Mirrors), this vibrant, Spanish-influenced work was one of many in which the composer celebrated his Basque heritage. In 1918, Ravel created the orchestral version that is now an audience favorite and a staple of the concert hall. The work appears here alongside the PrElude and Danse du Rouet that were written especially for the ballet version of Ravel's fairy-tale suite, Ma M~rel'Oye. Inspired by Ravel's friendship with a pair of piano-playing children, the original1908 piano duet version of the "Mother Goose" suite was orchestrated in 1911.In this form it became the basis for a ballet, to which these two charming newmovements were added.
