我所编著的《美英报刊阅读教程（高级本）》，承蒙广大读者厚爱，自2001年出版以来，已连续印刷14次。近两年来，世界政治格局、经济形势、社会文化、文教科技等方面出现了一些新的重要情况，不少高校同行建议我根据新的形势对原教材部分课文作相应替换更新，这便使我葫发了编写“高级本精选版”的想法。 笔者从事高校英语报刊教学已有42年，对报刊英语的研究也有30余年。 多年的教学实践证明，英语报刊是十分理想的教学资料。报刊具有贴近时代、贴近大众、贴近现实、贴近生活的特点。作为教学资料，英语报刊具有以下四点显著优势：内容新颖、语言现代、资料丰富、词语实用。 伴随着国际交流的迅猛增加，英语报刊课程的重要性日趋突出，越来越多的高校为英语专业和非英语专业学生开设了这门课程。 教育部对英语报刊教学给予高度重视。教学大纲的四、六、八级阅读项目都明确将阅读英美报刊水平作为评定阅读能力的标准。 为了适应形势的需求，自20世纪90年代初以来我们先后编著出版了针对大学不同层次学生水平的英语报刊系列教材（详见“主编简介”）。这套教材融入了我多年外报外刊的教学和研究成果，它们的共同之处在于突出学生能力的培养。 选材所坚持的标准是：题材覆盖面广、文章内容典型、语言质量上乘、知识含量丰富、使用时效较长。
本书从美、英近期15种主要新闻刊物精选文章36篇，以专题为线，共分10个单元。书中所选文章质量上乘，内容典型，语言丰富，趣味较强，时效较长。编写突出能力培养。配合课文，每课后设有7个部分：Ⅰ．课文生词；Ⅱ．知识介绍；Ⅲ．难点注释；Ⅳ．语言简说；Ⅴ．内容分析；Ⅵ．问题思考；Ⅶ．话题讨论。 “知识介绍”栏目提供与课文相关的社会文化背景，“语言简说”栏目结合课文介绍现代报刊英语特色。“内容分析”栏目旨在培养读者理解推断能力，“话题讨论”意在提高读者思辨能力。本书主要对象是大学英语专业高年级学生和具有同等水平的自学者。 此书融入了主编40余年外报外刊的教学经验，30余年报刊英语的研究成果。 本书为教师配有教学参考资料，提供“内容分析”和“问题思考”两项练习的参考答案和篇章层次的分析。

Yet in many cases, Koreans strike out on their own because they have hit, or afraid theywill hit, a "glass ceiling" in American corporations. Mins estimates suggest that 60percent of the greengrocers have college degrees. Many would be working in the professionsif they thought they had a fair shot at promotion. As one Asian graduate student put it,Americans tend to see Asians as "high-tech coolies," fit for technical jobs but unable forupper management. Unemployed Asian youths, particularly the Indochinese, are fueling a different growthindustry, street gangs. In Boston, there are perhaps 100 Southeast Asian youths in gangswith names like the Oriental Street Boys and the Tiny Rascals, says Ratha Yem, a specialassistant to the Massachusetts attorney general. Some have no home, and a maiority havewitnessed the death of a family member in violence back in Indochina. In New York, similarbut even larger groups are challenging the Mafia as a leading mob threat. The desperation ofthese youths points to other holes in the model-minority image: by one estimate, the influxof refugees in the 1980s raised the number of Asian-Americans living close to or below thepoverty line to 20 percent. Martyrs: Its perhaps not surprising then that some Asian-Americans see themselves asbrothers in suffering with African-Americans. In some areas, there are real parallels. Bothgroups have their martyrs. The Asians Rodney King was Vincent Chin, a 27-year-oldChinese-American beaten to death in Detroit by a white autoworker and his stepson whoreportedly called Chin a "Jap. His attackers got off in 1983 with three years on probationand a small fine on manslaughter charges —— a slap on the wrist that still upsets the Asian-American community.
