2009年是新中国成立60周年华诞，60年来中国考古事业稳步发展、开拓向前，继承发扬了优良的学术传统，吸取了国内外文化遗产保护的先进理念，成为保证国民经济建设快速发展和实现社会主义文化大发展大繁荣的重要力量。2009年度36项目,重要考古发现，是从全年500余项考古发掘项目中精选出来的，遴选标准仍是注重其中蕴含的历史信息、学术价值和考古工作的新理念、新方法。江苏邳州梁王城遗址大汶口文化中晚期墓地的发现，填补了苏北地区大汶口文化中晚期及其向龙山文化过渡的考古学文化空白。杭州余杭玉架山遗址是首次揭露的长江下游地区新石器时代的环壕聚落遗址，为研究良渚文化小型完整聚落提供了珍贵的资料。湖北孝感叶家庙城址是在鄂东北部发现的首座新石器时代晚期城址，丰富了我们对长江中游史前城址的认识。四川屏山向家坝库区叫化岩遗址的文化内涵具有自身的特点，是川南地区金沙江下游一种全新的考古学文化类型，对于建立四川地区新石器时代文化的谱系具有重要意义。山东高青陈庄西周城址对于研究“丰”与齐国的关系以及早期齐国的历史具有重要价值。河南荥阳娘娘寨两周时期城址填补了郑州地区西周文化遗存的空白。香港屯门扫管笏遗址包含相当于商周时期、汉代以及明代的文化遗存，为研究香港的历史文化及其与华南地区的文化关系提供了重要资料。云南澄江金莲山墓地复杂的葬式和特殊的葬俗为滇池区域青铜时代文化的研究提供了珍贵资料。
《2009中国重要考古发现》是本社2002年版《考古随笔》的续篇，共收录作者文物考古随笔类文章61篇，分“域外新知”、“趣味考古”、“古今之间”、“读书识小”、“回到考古”几部分。同2002年版《考古随笔》相比，作者的视野更加开放，除了仍旧注意与异文化的比较，我们身边的许多事物，也被作者作为观察和研究的对象，而且常常是从许多看似不显眼的地方入手，寻找古人生活的真实情景。其视野和视角始终不失个考古学家的立场，处处体现了作者试图在古今之间“铺设架可靠的桥梁，使我们通过材料的连接把对古代历史的复原和解释建立在可信的基础上”的努力和匠心。
