Glossary
The idea of patient rights came about when patients deman-ded more information about their health problems and treat-ment. They also demanded better care at lower costs and wantedto be more involved in the decisions about their care and treat-ment. Patients were no longer willing to be viewed as helplessand unknowing people who accepted the doctorYs advice withoutquestion. In 1973 the American Hospital Association (AHA) de-veloped and issued A Patient's Bill of Rights. The bill of rights states that the patient has the right to ex-pect"considerate and respectful care". The patient should betreated as a person and be given kind and thoughtful care. Theyshould not be denied access to care due to race, creed, colour, na-tional origin, sex, age, disability or source of payment. The val-ues, beliefs, cultural practices and personality of the patientshould be considered when planning and providing care.
