According to Verschueren (1987, 1999), the central research questionguiding the research in the field of pragmatics is 'What do people do when usinglanguage?' In other words, pragmatics should be conceived as the study of themechanisms and motivations behind the linguistic choices and of the effectsthey have and are intended to have (Verschueren 1987: 14). Inspired by this, the present study endeavors to achieve the following objectives: Firstly, to generate a coherent theoretical model based on Verschueren'sLinguistic Adaptation Theory for the analysis of interdiscursivity. ForVerschueren, 'using language must consist of the continuous making oflinguistic choices, consciously or unconsciously, for language-internal (i.e.structural) and/or language-external reasons' (1999: 55-56), and verbalcommunication is a dynamic process of adaptation between linguisticstructures and contextual correlates. So this analytical model is to approachinterdiscursivity coherently from the four interrelated angles, namely, context, structure, dynamics, and salience. And it will incorporate the linguistic, socialand cognitive elements in exploring the functioning process ofinterdiscursivity. We believe this will certainly develop a new perspective for the understandingofinterdiscursivity in contemporary Chinese public discourse. Secondly, to present a systematic account of the generative and operativemechanisms lying behind interdiscursivity. Specifically, we will identifywhat genres, discourses, or styles are drawn upon in the interdiscursivetext under analysis, how they are mixed together and in what ways they areinterpreted. This identification needs alot of contextual information and isclosely related to levels of salience and metapragmatic awareness. Once theseinterconnections have been successfully established, we will then analyze thelinguistic structure and describe the meaning generation dynamics in order tobetter interpret this linguistic phenomenon. ……
