章节摘录

SUNDAY LUNCH It is common in Britain for families to try to get together for Sunday lunch. Traditionally, a large roast meal would be prepared such as roast beef, york- shire pudding, roast potatoes, boiled vegetables, and thick, rich gravy madewith the residue of the roast beef. Roast beef traditionally goes with york- shire pudding which is not a pudding at all, but a kind of batter baked in the oven. The meat could be beef, pork, chicken or lamb, roasted in the oven. Different relishes traditionally accompany the meat. Beef has horseradish sauce. Lamb goes with mint sauce. Pork goes with apple sauce and chicken goes with a stuffing made with breadcrumbs, onions and sage or other herbs. Nowadays many families do not make the traditional roast meal as it is time-consuming to prepare and the cuts of meat used are very expensive. Also, young people may want a more 6modern' meal. However, when we leave home, those of us brought up on the traditional iSunday roast' are very pleased to eat this at Mother's or Grandmother's when we visit - most of us are too lazy to cook it for ourselves! For those who do not live with their families, such as students or people working away from home, Sunday lunch would be the most likely time to in-troduce your girlfriend or boyfriend to the family. In Britain, this does not imply that there is an engagement or that marriage will follow. Also, most British young people are not much influenced by the family as to whom they will choose to marry or live with. Living with someone without marriage is not frowned on by the majority of indigenous British people, (a recent survey found that six out of ten couples choose not to marry) , though many new im-migrant communities, especially those who are Muslem, are far stricter on this issue - indeed, it is still out of the question for most of those from Arab countries, India or Pakistan to live with a person without marriage. ……
