Sponsored by China Society for Human Rights Studies．and taking thetheme of Respecting and Promoting Human Rights and Constructing a Harmonious World，the International Symposium on Human Rights was held in Beijing，China from November 22 to 24．2006．More than 70 humanrights exports and government officials from China as well as 18 othercountries and regions including the US，Switzerland，Sweden，Greece．Japan，the ROK，Saudi Arabia，Mexico，Zambia，Belarus，Vietnam．Cu．ba，Indonesia，Iran，Ukraine，South Africa．Brazil and Argentina attended the symposium．Jiang Zhenghaa，ViceChairman of the StandingCommittee of the National People’s Congress，and Cai Wu．Minister 0fthe State Council Information Office P．R．C delivered sDeeches at the opening ceremony．

First of all，the objective and principles of the Charter ofthe United Nations and theUniversaf Declaration of Human Rights The Charter 0，the United Nations lays down the basic principles for internationalrelations．which catl for equality between sovereign states．settlement of internationaldisputes through peaceful means，noninfringement upon other countries’territorial in tegrity and political independence，and noninterference into other countries’internalaffai．Ever since its founding，the world body has taken respecting and protecting human rights as one ot its three main objectives．The Universal Declaration of Humanmght adopted by the United Nations in 1948 provides a set of authoritative details forlmDlementation of the principles laid down in the Charter on the United Natio，for human rights and basic freedoms．Because of this，the Declaration and the Charter is con．sistent in essence and spirit with regard to the question of human righm Respecting andupholding the objective and principles of the Charter and Declaration is a must if the in-ternational human rights cause is to enjoy a sound development As the basic criteria forguiding international relations，these constitute a reliable guarantee for the realization ofworld peace and development and for the building of a harmonious wodd．We hold thatthe objective and principles of the Charter and Declaration must be upheld，and that therole played by the United Nations must be strengthened constantly．
