内容概要

The book's great merit lies in the relationship between Tom Sawyer and his Aunt Polly, and with Huckleberry Finn; and in its descriptions of village life in that part of America during the middle of the nineteenth century. This book has been specially adapted for those for whom English is a second or foreign language, and who have reached at least a lower intermediate level. It will be suitable, in fact, for anyone who finds the original book too long or too difficult. Difficult sentence structures have been avoided, though every effort has been made to retain something of the style of the original.

'Tom, we've got to. You know that. That devil Joe would murder us if they didn't hang him. Now, look here, Tom. Let's swear to one another not to breathe a word,' 'I'm agreed. It's the best thing. Would you just hold hands and swear that we…' ' Oh, no, that wouldn't do for this. This ought to be written-and in blood.' Tom was thrilled with the idea. It was deep and dark, and awful. He picked up a clean pine board, took a fragment of red chalk from his pocket and slowly wrote these lines: Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer swear they will keep quiet about this and they wish they may drop down dead in their tracks if they ever tell-and rot. Huckleberry was filled with admiration at Tom's writing. He at once took a pin from his coat and was going to prick his flesh, but Tom, said ' Hold on! Don't do that; a pin's brass. It might have poison on it.' So Tom unwound the thread from one of his needles, and each boy pricked the ball of his thumb and squeezed out a. drop of blood. In time, after many squeezes, Tom managed to sign his initials, using his little finger as a pen. Then he showed Huckleberry how to make an H and an F, and the oath was complete. After this, the boys separated. When Tom crept in at his bedroom window, the night was almost over. He undressed with extra caution, and fell asleep, unaware that Sicl was awake, and had been so for an hour. When Tom awoke, Sid was dressed and gone. Why had he not been called? The thought worried him. He went downstairs feeling drowsy. The family were still at table, but they had finished their breakfast. There was no word of reproof, but no-one met his eyes. There was a silence that struck chill to his heart. After breakfast his aunt took him aside and wept over him. This was worse than a thousand whippings and Tom's heart was more hurt than his body. He went off to school, gloomy and sad, and took his flogging for playing hookey the day before, as if it were a trifle compared with his heavier woes. He sat in his seat, elbows on the desk, and his chin in his hands, staring at the wall. His elbow was pressing against something hard. After a long time he slowly and sadly changed his position, and took up the hard object with a sigh. It was in a paper. He unrolled it. It was his brass doorknob ! It was almost more than he could stand. ……

Tom Sawyer's appetite for adventure leads him and his friend, Huckleberry Finn, into all kinds of trouble. At first, the two boys plan to be pirates, but then they discover that there is mystery in their own village on the Mississippi River. Can they prove that the wrong man is accused of murder? And where is the stolen gold hidden? Will the boys be able to find it? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been abridged and simplified by Marie Coghill. Macmillan's Stories to Remember series introduces new readers to famous stories whose quality and entertainment value have stood the test of time. The books are abridged and simplified, but as much as possible the author's original style and the storyline has been retained. They are suitable for non-native speakers of English from lower intermediate level upwards, as well as providing an easy introduction to the great storytellers for young native speakers. The series is divided into Junior and Senior tiltes; the former are rather shorter and set in a larger typeface. For a full list of titles, see inside.
