本教材依据《成人高等教育学士学位英语水平考试大纲(非英语专业)》，参照国内同类教材，针对成人高校学生学习特点编写而成，主要用作各类成人高校专升本各专业的基础英教材。编写本教材的指导思想是：培养学生掌握扎实的英语基础知识，具备较强的阅读理解翻译和写作的能力，顺利通过成人高等教育学士学位英语水平考试。
本教材共24单元，每单元分为A、B两部分：A部分包括课文、生词、短语、注释练习；B部分是借鉴学士学位英语水平考试题型设计的专项练习与实践。课文是教材的核心与学习重点。文章全部出自英文报刊、杂志和书籍。内容涉及人文历史、科普教育、社会问题、生活习惯等题材。语言规范，长度、难度适宜，内容安排上循序渐进。
