Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is probably Britains best-known and best-loved author. A year later he wasrecalled to Somerset House in London, and this idyllic period came to an abrupt end.For a few weeks Charles stayed behind with the Giles family until he too had to leave,travelling alone in a stagecoach with his few possessions and a copy of Goldsmith's TheBee which his schoolmaster had given him as a parting gift. He never forgot the dismaljourney, nor the smell of the damp straw 'in which I was packed - like game - andforwarded'.
