So he chose nuclear physics——open only to the few excellent students——as his major in university， and thus was among the first batch of students atthe University of Science and Technology of China. At that time， he did notknow that when he graduated， he would be assigned to work on barren landsin remote areas. His teachers included such renowned Chinese scientists asQian Sanqiang， Zhao Zhongrao and Zhang Wenyu， among others. Deeplyimpressed by their exacting teaching style and modesty， Zhao Qizheng studiedhard at university. With five years of study， Zhao learned general knowledge aboutphysics. He was greatly interested in the subject and had a betterunderstanding to physics. The tedious formulas， sophisticated nuclearnature， bulky accelerators and experimental facilities truly appealed tohim. Yet the fate of young people at that time was closely connected withstate policy. As Chinas relations with the Soviet Union worsened， Zhaosdream of becoming a scholar also came to a halt. In the mid-1950s， China devoted great efforts to developing itsnational defense， with the most distinguished project being the productionof the atomic bomb， hydrogen bomb and an artificial satellite project. Inthe 1960s， Chinas relations with the Soviet Union deteriorated. The SovietUnion tore up old agreements and ended technical aid to China. TheSoviet Union recalled their experts， and stopped providing China withtechnical documents， raw materials and experimental facilities， with Chinasubsequently suffering greatly in cutting-edge technology construction.This meant that many young Chinese nuclear engineers had to workharder by themselves on the frontlines.
